The News: Scientists Haydée García-Lázaro and Santani Teng wanted to know how the human brain builds a picture of a room from just sound . They studied four blind people who are expert "echolocators" — they make a sharp click with their tongue, listen for the echo, and use it to find walls, doorways, even shapes. The new study (published in eNeuro ) found that each click-echo pair adds a little more detail to a mental map. One expert got an answer right after just two clicks. The brain was reading sound the way our eyes read light.

Professor Pip adjusted his slightly crooked spectacles and patted the bulging pockets of his green lab coat. "Ah! Just the things." He pulled out two acorns and a small wooden clicker, then pointed up at the cozy attic rafters above his lab.

"Today, my dear scientists, we are going to see the room…" — he paused dramatically — "…with our ears."

"With our ears?!" laughed Mia.

"That doesn't make any sense!" said Leo, scrunching his nose.

Pip's bushy tail swished happily. "Doesn't it? Close your eyes and listen — really listen."

CLICK! Pip snapped the little wooden clicker.

The children sat very still. After a beat, Mia whispered, "I… I heard it bounce. Off something hard. Over there." She pointed, eyes still shut.

"Precisely!" Pip beamed. "That bounce-back is called an echo. And what you just did — sending out a sound and reading what comes back — is called echolocation. Bats do it. Dolphins do it. And believe it or not, some people do it too."

He clicked again. CLICK. CLICK. CLICK.

"Some people who are blind become wonderful echolocators," Pip explained. "They click with their tongue and listen as the sound brushes past the wall, the doorway, the lamppost. Each click is like a tiny pebble dropped in a pond — the ripples come back carrying news."

"Like… like when I yell into a cave and it yells back?" Leo offered.

"Exactly right, my friend! Same idea — only quieter and quicker."

Pip pulled out his pocket notebook. "Scientists just discovered something rather marvelous. Every single click adds another brushstroke to a person's mental picture. After two clicks, you have a rough idea. After eight, a much richer one. The brain is painting the room with sound."

He looked up through the small attic window at the soft evening sky. "Isn't it lovely? The world is full of more ways of knowing than we usually remember. Eyes for light. Ears for sound. Fingertips for warmth. And, with practice, ears that can read shapes too."

He pressed the wooden clicker into Mia's paw — er, hand. "Now you try. Close your eyes. Click once. Tell me where the bookshelf is."

The News: On Saturday, May 30, around 2:06 p.m., a brilliant fireball ripped across the daytime sky over the northeastern United States. NASA confirmed the space rock was about 5 feet wide, weighed roughly 5.6 metric tons, and was flying at 42,000 mph when it exploded about 31 miles up in the atmosphere — with the energy of 230 tons of TNT. People as far as two Canadian provinces heard the BOOM. Tiny meteorite fragments are thought to have sprinkled down onto Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Nobody was hurt.

📚 A STORY FROM PROFESSOR PIP

Professor Pip galloped up the hilltop with his green lab coat flapping behind him, brass telescope tucked under one arm and a bright red balloon bobbing in the other paw.

"There!" he pointed. A long, smoky white streak still curled high above the meadow. "Did you see it, did you see it?!"

"It looked like a comet!" gasped Mia.

"And then it went BOOM!" said Leo, hands clapped over his ears even though the boom was long gone.

Pip's tail twitched with delight. "That, my brilliant friends, was a meteor. A chunk of rock from far out in space, about the size of you, Leo, came whizzing into Earth's air at forty-two thousand miles per hour."

Leo blinked. "Faster than a jet?"

"Faster than fifty jets stacked end to end and lit on fire," Pip said, "and far above us — about thirty-one miles up — it heated up so much that it shattered."

He held up the balloon. "But the BOOM you heard isn't from breaking. It's from going faster than sound. Watch."

He blew the balloon bigger and bigger and bigger. Mia covered her ears. Leo squeezed his eyes shut. POP!

The children jumped, then giggled.

"That tiny pop," said Pip, holding up the rubbery remains, "was the air around the balloon getting squished so fast it slammed back into itself. When a meteor — or a jet — punches through the sky faster than sound can move, it squishes a giant wall of air just like that. We call that a sonic boom."

"Oh!" Mia's eyes went huge. "Like when I jump into the pool and a big wave smacks the side?"

"Exactly right!" Pip clapped his paws. "Only made of air instead of water."

Pip lifted his brass telescope and gazed at the lingering smoke trail. "Somewhere down on a Cape Cod beach right now, there might be a little black pebble lying in the sand. Older than dinosaurs. Older than Earth itself. Just sitting there."

"Now," he said, handing the kids each a fresh balloon, "blow these up. Run downhill. Let them go. Tell me which way they push you — and where the air goes after."

The News: Scientists at the University of Tokyo, led by Shigeharu Kinoshita, just mapped 96.7% of the genome of a Greenland shark — the very first time anyone has done that. Greenland sharks are remarkable: they can live for around 400 years , don't become adults until they're 150, grow to 13–16 feet long, and cruise in the cold dark waters of the North Atlantic and Arctic down to 1.65 miles deep. By reading their DNA, scientists hope to learn how these giants avoid cancer and live so astonishingly long. The study was published May 19 in PNAS .

Professor Pip pulled his magnifying glass from his coat pocket and pressed it against the glowing blue glass of his big lab tank. Inside, a long, slow, pale-grey shadow drifted by — the size of a small canoe.

"Children," Pip whispered, "meet a Greenland shark. The longest-lived backboned animal on the entire planet."

Mia pressed her cheek to the glass. "How old is it?"

"Some are four hundred years old," Pip said. His spectacles slipped down his nose and he didn't even notice.

Leo's mouth fell open. "FOUR HUNDRED?!"

"This shark," Pip said, tail swishing in slow ocean rhythm, "could have been born before electricity, before cars, before airplanes. It is still swimming. And it doesn't even become a grown-up until it's 150."

"It's a teenager longer than my whole grandma's life!" Mia gasped.

Pip clapped his paws. "Precisely!"

He pulled his chemistry flask of bright green liquid from a pocket and set it gently on the table. "Scientists in Japan just did something wonderful. Every animal carries an instruction book in every one of its cells. We call that book the genome. It tells the cell what to build, what to fix, what to throw away."

He tapped the flask. "These researchers read almost the entire Greenland shark instruction book — page 1 to page 96.7 out of 100. They want to know: what does it say? What chapters does this shark have that we don't? Why does it almost never get cancer? Why doesn't it seem to grow tired?"

Leo squinted at the slow grey shape. "Maybe it doesn't get tired because it's so slow. My grandpa says he saves energy by sitting down."

"Exactly right!" laughed Pip, eyes shining. "Greenland sharks live where it's cold and dark, more than a mile deep — pressure, ink-black ocean, freezing water. Going slowly is one of their secrets. So is having a body that knows how to fix its own damage, again and again, for centuries."

Pip looked into the tank. "Imagine. Out in the Arctic, right now, sharks older than this building are paddling silently in the dark. Reading their DNA might teach us how to live longer, healthier lives."

He handed Mia and Leo each a little notebook. "Now you try. Write down three questions you'd ask this shark — if it could answer."
