Two Planets as Fluffy as Cotton Candy
The News: Astronomers using NASA's TESS space telescope — with a little help from a telescope way down in Antarctica — just found two new planets circling a sun-like star 1,113 light-years away. Both are as big as Jupiter but so unbelievably lightweight that scientists say their densities are almost exactly like cotton candy.
A Story from Professor Pip's Science Discovery

Professor Pip pushed his crooked spectacles up his nose and patted the bulging pockets of his forest-green lab coat. "Ah! Just what today calls for," he said, and out came the strangest pair of things: an enormous pink cloud of cotton candy on a wooden stick, and one small grey pebble.

Mia, Leo, and their friend Sofia sat cross-legged on a picnic blanket in the forest clearing, blinking.

"Professor Pip," said Sofia, "why do you have snack food AND a rock?"

"Because, my fellow scientists," Pip said, tail swishing, "astronomers have found two planets that are as big as Jupiter — but as fluffy as this." He held up the cotton candy.

"WHAT?" Leo laughed. "Planets can't be fluffy!"

"Curiouser and curiouser, isn't it?" Pip beamed. "Here. Feel." He handed Sofia the cotton candy and Mia the pebble. "Which one feels heavier?"

"The rock, obviously," said Mia.

"Precisely! Now — if I made a rock the size of your head and a cotton candy the size of your head, the rock would still be much, much heavier. That's called density. How much stuff is squeezed into a certain space."

Pip pulled out his pocket notebook. "These two new planets orbit a star called TOI 791. One weighs about the same as nine and a half Earths. The other, about eighteen Earths. That sounds like a lot — until you learn that Jupiter, which is only a little bigger than these planets, is 317 times heavier than Earth!"

Sofia squished the cotton candy. "So the planets are big but almost… empty?"

"Oh! Like a beach ball!" said Leo. "Big on the outside, mostly air inside."

"Exactly right!" Pip cried, tail wagging. Astronomers call them superpuffs. Scientists think these planets might have been born far from their star, then wandered in closer. As they warmed up, their atmospheres puffed out like popcorn — making them huge but incredibly light. Next, the James Webb Space Telescope will sniff their air to figure out what they're made of.

Pip looked up through the trees at the pale afternoon sky. "Somewhere out there, right now, two enormous fluffballs are floating around a distant star. Isn't the universe a delightfully strange kitchen?"

Then he handed each child a piece of cotton candy. "Now you try. Squeeze it, feel it, weigh it in your paw. That's what a superpuff planet would feel like in the palm of your hand."

The 'Blessed Lizard' Who Ruled Before Dinosaurs
The News: Paleontologists in Argentina just announced the discovery of a giant Triassic predator named Shakajlura riojanensis — a nearly 20-foot-long crocodile-cousin with serrated teeth that ruled the land 237 million years ago, long before big dinosaurs took over. Its name means 'Blessed Lizard' in the language of the Diaguita people.

Professor Pip knelt in the red rocky dust of a canyon and pulled a small brush from his lab-coat pocket. Beside him, Mia and Leo held their breath.

"Watch this," Pip whispered, sweeping the brush across a jagged shape half-buried in the stone. A long, curved, wickedly serrated tooth emerged — as long as his paw.

"Whoa," breathed Leo. "That is NOT a dinosaur tooth."

"You're right," Pip said, tail swishing with excitement. "This tooth belongs to something older. Something that ruled the world before big dinosaurs even existed."

"Before the dinosaurs?!" said Mia. "But dinosaurs were first!"

Pip's spectacles slipped as he shook his head. "Oh my whiskers, no! Long before T. rex or Triceratops, there was a time called the Triassic — about 237 million years ago. Back then, Earth had just survived its biggest disaster ever, when almost all life vanished. And the animals who bounced back the fastest weren't dinosaurs at all. They were… crocodile cousins."

He picked up a piece of chalk and drew on a flat rock: a long snout, short powerful legs, a barrel body with a swishing tail. "Scientists in Argentina just named a brand-new one: Shakajlura. The name means 'Blessed Lizard' in the language of the Diaguita people who live there. It was nearly 20 feet long — as long as a school bus. And every single tooth was like a knife pointing out of its mouth."

Leo pretended to snap his jaws. "So it was, like, the biggest predator around?"

"An apex predator," Pip said, tapping the tooth gently. "The top of its food chain. And here's the wild part: for about ten million years, animals like Shakajlura ruled — until slowly, slowly, dinosaurs got bigger and eventually took over."

Mia scrunched her forehead. "Oh! Like when a new kid comes to school, and everybody's used to the old rules, but then everything changes?"

Pip clapped his paws. "Exactly right! In nature, when one group of animals fades, another rises to take the throne. And Shakajlura's descendants — modern crocodiles — are still with us today. They've been around, in one shape or another, for over 200 million years."

He stood up and looked out across the canyon. "Every fossil we brush free is a message from a lost world. Isn't it wonderful to know that world had its own giants, its own dramas — long, long before ours began?"

Then Pip pressed a small fossil brush into each of their paws. "Now you try. Every rock in this canyon might hide a story from 237 million years ago."

Why the Fish Are Suddenly Swimming Somewhere Else
The News: NASA just released fresh satellite images from its PACE mission showing that the middle of the Pacific Ocean has way fewer tiny plants floating in it this summer — because a giant weather pattern called El Niño has arrived. And in Peru, hungry pelicans are wandering right into towns looking for food.

By the riverbank, Professor Pip had set up something odd: a big clear glass tank, a small pitcher of icy water, and — from the biggest pocket of his lab coat — a chemistry flask of warm water with steam curling gently off the top.

Mia and Leo watched, puzzled.

"Today," Pip announced, adjusting his crooked spectacles, "we're going to figure out why fishermen in Peru can't find any fish."

"With a tank?" Leo asked.

"With a tank," Pip nodded. First, he poured in the cool water. Then he carefully sprinkled tiny green flecks — bits of dried plant food — on the surface. "Pretend these are phytoplankton. Tiny drifting plants that live in the ocean. They need sunlight AND food from deep water to grow. And nearly every ocean animal — from little fish, to giant whales — depends on them."

Slowly, he poured the warm water on top. And something magical happened. A clear invisible line appeared inside the tank — warm water floating on top of cool water like oil on vinegar.

"Whoa," breathed Mia. "It's like… layers."

"Precisely!" Pip beamed. "Warm water is less dense, so it floats. Now — normally, wind pushes the warm water aside so cold, food-rich water can rise up to feed the phytoplankton. That's called upwelling."

He held up NASA's newest satellite picture. "But every few years, something called El Niño happens. The winds change. The warm layer gets thicker and thicker, like a heavy blanket. And the cold, nutrient-rich water underneath can't reach the surface. No food for the phytoplankton. No phytoplankton for the little fish. No little fish for the big fish. No big fish for the pelicans."

Leo's eyes went huge. "OH! Like when a lid gets stuck on a jar and nothing can come out!"

"Exactly right!" said Pip. "In Peru, pelicans are actually walking into cities right now, searching for something to eat. NASA's brand-new satellite, PACE, is watching all of this from space — measuring the ocean's color to see where the tiny plants are shrinking, so scientists know what might happen next."

Pip's tail swished as he looked out at the river. "Imagine — an invisible layer of warm water halfway around the world is changing what a pelican has for dinner. That's how connected our whole planet is."

He handed the kids each a plastic spoon. "Now you try. Stir the tank gently and see if you can mix the layers back together. Because that's what the wind does every day, all over the ocean — until one summer, it doesn't."
