The News: Paleontologists in Argentina's Río Negro Province just uncovered a nearly whole 70-million-year-old fossilized egg — possibly the first complete meat-eating dinosaur egg ever found in South America. The team revealed the moment live on camera, and now scientists are checking whether a tiny embryo might still be curled up inside.
A Story from Professor Pip's Science Discovery

Professor Pip adjusted his slightly crooked spectacles and patted the pockets of his forest-green lab coat until he found what he needed. Out came a tiny brush with soft bristles, and a small brass compass that clinked against the rocks.

"Ah! Perfect," he whispered. "Today, my fellow scientists, we are becoming paleontologists — scientists who study things that lived a very, very long time ago."

Mia and Leo knelt beside him in the reddish dust of a windy hillside. In front of them, half-buried in the sandstone, was a smooth, speckled shape a little bigger than a coconut.

"Is that a ROCK?" Leo whispered.

"Curiouser and curiouser," said Professor Pip, his tail giving a happy swish. "It looks like a rock. But we think it is an egg. From a dinosaur that walked here seventy million years ago."

Mia gasped so loudly her sun hat slid down over her eyes.

"How did an egg turn into a rock?" she asked, pushing the hat back up.

"Let me show you." Professor Pip pulled a little sand-filled bottle from another pocket and poured a slow trickle over a fallen leaf on the ground. Grain by grain, the leaf disappeared under a tiny hill of sand. "Long ago," he said, "the mama dinosaur laid her egg. Then wind and rivers brought sand, and mud, and more sand — layer after layer — until the egg was tucked in deep, like a bedtime story with a hundred blankets on top."

He brushed the tiny hill flat again. "Over millions of years, water sneaks into the shell, carrying itty-bitty bits of minerals. The minerals settle in and harden. That slow, sneaky swap is called fossilization. The shape stays. The stuff changes."

"Ohhh!" Leo clapped. "Like when I leave a wet footprint on the sidewalk and the sun bakes it dry!"

"Precisely right!" beamed Professor Pip.

He picked up his brush and, oh so gently, swept a whisker of dust from the shell. "The scientists in Patagonia are doing exactly this — very, very slowly. Because the egg might still have a baby dinosaur curled up inside, sleeping through seventy million years."

Mia looked up at the sky. Somewhere, a hawk called. "I wonder what the baby dreamed about," she said quietly.

Professor Pip smiled and handed each of them their own tiny brush. "Now you try. Slow as a snail. Gentle as a cloud."

Astronomers Spot a Brand-New Kind of Cosmic Object: A "Black Hole Star"
The News: Using NASA's James Webb Space Telescope, astronomers found a bright red dot from when the universe was very young — and it looks like something no one has ever seen before. They think it's a black hole star: a black hole about 100,000 times the mass of our Sun, hiding inside a puffed-up cocoon of hot gas as big as our whole solar system.

Professor Pip climbed a grassy hilltop just as the stars were beginning to peek out. He set down his little brass telescope and pulled a fluffy pom-pom and a small marble from his lab coat pocket.

"Oh my whiskers, look at THAT," he breathed, pointing at a faint reddish speck between two stars. "Astronomers found a light like that with a very big space telescope — a telescope called James Webb. And they think it isn't a star at all."

Mia squinted through the eyepiece. "It looks like a star. A tiny red one."

"Curiouser and curiouser," said Professor Pip. "Because hiding inside that soft red glow, they think, is something with the strongest pull in the universe. A black hole."

Leo's eyes went as wide as saucers. "A black hole? Isn't that where nothing can escape?"

"Precisely right. A black hole is a place where gravity," Pip whispered the word like a secret, "is so strong that even light can't run away. But this one has done something new — it's wearing a coat."

He held up the marble. "Here is our black hole." Then he wrapped the pom-pom softly around it. "And here is a HUGE cloud of gas around it, as big as our whole solar system. When the black hole gobbles up gas, the cloud heats up and GLOWS." He waggled the fluffy pom-pom in the moonlight. "From very far away, that glowing cocoon looks just like a very unusual star."

"So it's a black hole… in a fluffy blanket!" giggled Mia.

"Exactly right!" Pip clapped his paws. "They call it a black hole star. And here is the truly wonderful part — the light we're seeing left that cocoon about thirteen billion years ago. When we look at it, we're peeking back almost to the beginning of the whole universe."

The three of them lay back on the picnic blanket. High above, the sky was thick with starlight, each pinprick older than the one before.

"Every time we point a telescope somewhere new," Pip said softly, "the sky tells us it has one more surprise. Now I wonder — how many more secrets is it keeping?"

They look like little jellyfish with a clear sail on top, but experts say each one is actually a whole team of tiny animals working together as a single floating colony.

Professor Pip crouched at the edge of the surf, his fluffy tail flicking bits of wet sand as the sea whispered in and out. He patted his lab coat pockets and pulled out his trusty magnifying glass, a little paper boat, and a tiny fan the size of his paw.

"Look here, my fellow scientists," he whispered, "but do not touch."

Mia and Leo tiptoed over in their wellies. In the sand were dozens of teeny, glinting blue ovals — each one no bigger than a coin — with a tiny see-through fin standing straight up like a triangle.

"They look like little sailboats!" Leo said.

"Precisely! People call them by-the-wind sailors," said Professor Pip. He held up the magnifying glass so they could look closer. "Now — the surprising part. This one bright blue creature? It isn't one animal at all. It's actually hundreds of very tiny animals living together, all doing different jobs, like a floating town."

"A whole TOWN?" gasped Mia.

"A whole town," Pip nodded. "One part catches food. One part digests. One part holds everyone together. Scientists call a team like this a colony."

He set his paper boat on the sand and held up the little fan. "Now watch — this is how they travel." He gave a soft puff on the sail. WHOOSH! The paper boat scooted right across the sand.

"The wind pushes the sail," said Leo, "and the boat goes wherever the wind blows!"

"Exactly right!" Professor Pip clapped his paws. "These little sailors have no motors, no fins, no way to steer. They just… go with the wind. And when the wind blows toward the beach for many days in a row —" he swept a paw at the shore, "— thousands of them can wash up all at once."

Mia looked out at the wide gray sea and back at the little colony at her feet. "So they're not lost," she said. "They're just where the wind took them."

Professor Pip's ears wiggled with delight. "What a lovely way to see it." He knelt beside them. "Remember — no touching, because even the friendliest colony can have a tiny sting. But we can watch, and we can wonder. Now I wonder… where did this sailor set sail from?"
