Giants Under the Ice: A Dinosaur Turns Up in Antarctica
The News: Scientists just announced that the very first dinosaur fossil ever found in Antarctica belonged to the sauropod group — the enormous, long-necked, tail-thumping giants that were some of the biggest animals ever to walk on land. Antarctica isn't a place we usually picture as dino country. But once upon a time, it wasn't a place of ice and penguins at all.
A Story from Professor Pip's Science Discovery

Professor Pip adjusted his slightly crooked spectacles and stomped his boots to shake off the powdery snow. Around him, warm-glowing tents flapped in the wind, and cold blue light spilled across a rocky slope. He patted the bulging pockets of his green lab coat.

"Ah! Just what I need," he said, pulling out a tiny fossil brush, a rolled-up map, and his little brass compass.

"Professor Pip," said Mia, hugging her mittens close, "why are we digging in ANTARCTICA?"

"Because," Pip said, tail swishing, "someone left something enormous down here — a long, long time ago." He pointed at a curved dark shape half-buried in the rock. "This is a piece of bone. From a sauropod."

"A whaaat?" said Leo.

"A sauropod!" said Pip. "One of the biggest land animals that ever lived. Some were as long as a school bus. Some were LONGER! Their necks alone were bigger than a giraffe standing on tiptoes."

Mia's mouth dropped open. "In Antarctica? But — but everything is frozen!"

"Aha!" said Pip. "Now THAT is the question. Watch closely." He unrolled his crinkly map. It showed all the continents cut apart like puzzle pieces. He nudged them across the ground with his paw. WHOOSH — the pieces slid together into one giant land shape.

"Long ago," he said, "all the continents were squished together in a giant supercontinent. Antarctica wasn't at the bottom of the world. It was in a warm place. There were forests. And rivers. And a very hungry sauropod thumping through the ferns."

"So the land MOVED?" Leo said, eyes huge.

"Precisely!" said Pip. "The pieces of Earth we stand on are called tectonic plates. They drift very, very slowly — about as fast as your fingernails grow. But over millions of years, those tiny drifts move whole continents thousands of miles."

Mia gasped. "Oh! Like when I push all my blocks apart on the rug!"

"Exactly right!" beamed Pip, patting her mitten. "Only Earth's blocks are made of rock and take millions of years to slide."

He looked up at the pale sky. Snow drifted down softly, settling on the ancient bone. "Somewhere under this ice," he murmured, "is a whole warm world we never saw."

He handed each of them a soft brush from his pocket. "Now you try. Sweep gently — no rush. The rock has been waiting for us for seventy million years. It can wait a few more minutes."

The News: Astronomers just used NASA's James Webb Space Telescope to peer at a giant planet called WD 1856 b , which orbits the burned-out core of a dead star 82 light-years from Earth. The star should have swallowed the planet when it swelled up billions of years ago… but somehow it didn't. Now scientists finally know how the planet escaped.

Professor Pip stood on a grassy hilltop, his brass telescope propped on its tripod. Twilight was turning the sky deep purple, and one bright pinkish glow flickered on the horizon. He patted his lab coat pockets and pulled out — POOF — a big red balloon and a marble tied to a piece of string.

"Ah! My favorite props," he said, giving his tail a happy swish.

Mia and Leo sat cross-legged in the grass, faces upturned.

"Tonight," Pip announced, "we're going to talk about a planet that OUTLIVED its own sun."

"Outlived its sun?!" Mia gasped.

"That's impossible!" said Leo.

"Astronomers thought so too," said Pip. "But the James Webb Space Telescope just proved otherwise. There is a planet called WD 1856 b, and it orbits the leftover glowing core of a dead star, 82 light-years from here. Here's the puzzle: that star swelled up HUGE before it died. So how did the planet survive? Let me show you."

He held up the balloon and began to blow. FWOOOOP. It got bigger. FWOOOOP. Bigger. FWOOOOP. HUGE.

"Suns like ours run out of fuel eventually," Pip said. "When they do, they puff up like this balloon — into an enormous glowing ball called a red giant. Anything TOO close to the star gets gobbled up."

Leo's eyes went wide. "Gobbled up?!"

"Gobbled up," Pip nodded. "But watch this." He picked up the marble on its string and swung it in a slow wide circle around the balloon — never letting it touch. "WD 1856 b was orbiting FAR AWAY when its star swelled. Far enough to escape. It just sat out there, patient and safe."

"But then how did it get close?" Mia asked.

"Curiouser and curiouser!" said Pip, letting the balloon PHHHT — the air rushed out and it plopped onto the grass. "After the star ran out of puff, it shriveled into a tiny, hot leftover called a white dwarf. The planet, still orbiting, slowly, slowly drifted closer. Now it whips around that little dead star in just 34 hours."

Leo thought hard. "Oh! Like when the ice cream melts and the sprinkles slide down to the bottom!"

"Exactly right!" laughed Pip, adjusting his spectacles.

He looked up at the darkening sky. "Somewhere up there," he whispered, "a whole planet is still going. Even after its sun said goodbye. That is how vast and stubborn our universe can be."

Meet the Dudgeon walking shark, only the tenth kind of walking shark known to science. Locals call it kadedekedewa , which means "dog shark" or "lazy shark."

Professor Pip crouched at the edge of a warm, shallow tidepool. The sky above was black and full of stars, and palm trees swayed silently in the salty breeze. He held a small lantern high, and the glow rippled across the clear water. He patted his damp lab coat pockets and pulled out his magnifying glass.

"Ah! Just what I need," he whispered.

Mia and Leo crouched beside him, snorkel masks pushed up on their foreheads.

"Now," said Pip quietly, "keep still, and watch that little ledge. Right… THERE."

Something small and speckled crept out of the shadows and into the lantern light. It had a slender body about the size of Pip's arm, covered in tiny white dashes and brown dots. And it wasn't swimming.

It was WALKING.

"Whoa!" whispered Mia. "Is that — is that a SHARK?"

"A Dudgeon walking shark!" said Pip, tail giving a giddy little swish. "Scientists just discovered it, right here in the tidepools of Papua New Guinea. There are only ten kinds of walking shark in the whole world. And right in front of us is one of them, using its fins like little feet."

Leo's mouth was completely open. "But sharks SWIM. Why is it walking?"

"Splendid question!" said Pip. "When the tide goes out, some of these shallow pools get cut off from the sea. There isn't enough water to swim in. But if a shark can walk to another pool… where do you think all the little trapped fish and crabs are?"

"In the puddles!" said Mia. "It's like a shark buffet!"

"Exactly right!" Pip laughed. "That is called an adaptation — a special skill an animal develops over millions of years to fit its life. This shark can even slow its heart and its breathing so it can stay out of the water for a couple of hours."

He shone the lantern gently. The little shark waddled across the rocks with a rippling, sideways wiggle, then slipped into the next pool with a soft PLOP.

Pip looked out at the moonlit sea. "The ocean," he whispered, "still has so many secrets. Somebody, somewhere, is going to discover the next one."

He handed each child a magnifying glass. "Now you try. Walk very slowly along the pools. Look for anything you have never seen before. Because you never know — the next new species might be waiting for YOU."
