The News: Scientists in Australia just described a brand-new spider that catches its meals like a medieval war machine. The ballista spider builds tiny, spring-loaded silk snares under leaves, and when a green tree ant wanders by, the trap FIRES β€” flinging the ant into the spider's waiting web at up to 1,367 meters per second. That's about one-and-a-half times as fast as a bullet from a rifle. Gram for gram, it stores more energy than any other catapult scientists have ever measured in nature.
A Story from Professor Pip's Science Discovery

Professor Pip crouched on a mossy patch of the Australian rainforest, patting his bulging pockets. "Ah! Just what I need," he said, pulling out a small green rubber band and two smooth twigs.

Mia and Leo peered over his shoulder. A cousin named Asha, visiting from Brisbane, sat cross-legged in the ferns with a magnifying glass.

"Today," Pip announced, his fluffy ringed tail swishing, "we're going to learn how a spider β€” a spider! β€” built a machine that shoots ants faster than a rifle bullet."

"A SPIDER did that?!" gasped Leo.
"That's impossible," said Mia.
"Curiouser and curiouser," Pip agreed. "So let's find out how."

He stretched the little rubber band between the two twigs, further, and further, and further, until it trembled like a violin string. "Watch this closely, my fellow scientists. Nothing is happening β€” but is that true?"

"It looks…tight," said Asha.

"Precisely! It looks still, but inside every stretched thing, energy is waiting. Waiting so patiently. We call it elastic potential energy β€” energy stored in something that has been squeezed or pulled."

Pip let one twig slip. THWIP! The rubber band vanished into the ferns and the children shrieked with delight.

"THAT," Pip beamed, adjusting his crooked spectacles, "is what the ballista spider does β€” but tinier, and about a thousand times more clever. She winds a strand of silk tighter and tighter until it can barely hold still. Then she waits. When a green tree ant nibbles the trigger, SNAP! β€” the silk unspools all at once, and the ant flies straight into her waiting web."

"Like a catapult!" said Mia.

"Exactly right! A catapult, a slingshot, and a mousetrap all in one β€” but built out of a single thread of spider silk. Gram for gram, it stores more energy than any catapult scientists have ever measured. And here's the strangest part…" Pip lowered his voice. "She ONLY catches one kind of ant. Scientists think she's brushing something onto the silk that makes green tree ants β€” and only green tree ants β€” trip the trap."

Pip looked up through the eucalyptus canopy, tail curled thoughtfully. "Imagine that. Somewhere in this rainforest, right now, there are little machines waiting for the exact right ant."

He passed each child a fresh rubber band. "Try it yourselves β€” but only on leaves, please. No little brothers."

The News: Astronomers using NASA's TESS space telescope just announced the two biggest "super-puff" planets ever found. They orbit a faraway star called TOI-791, about 1,110 light-years from Earth in the constellation of the Flying Fish. Both planets are the size of Jupiter β€” but so unbelievably fluffy that if you could scoop up a chunk, it would weigh less than the same-sized chunk of shaving cream. Astronomers say Jupiter is up to thirty-five times denser than these new lightweights.

Professor Pip's lab smelled, unexpectedly, of sugar. He was standing at his workbench, tail swishing with excitement, holding a fluffy pink cloud of cotton candy in one paw and a small grey pebble in the other.

"Fellow scientists," he said, pushing his crooked spectacles up his nose, "close your eyes and pick a paw."

Leo pointed at the cotton candy. Mia pointed at the pebble.

"Heft them," said Pip, handing over. "Which one is heavier?"

"The pebble!" said Mia. "By SO much."

"But they're almost the same size," said Leo, squishing the cotton candy suspiciously.

"Exactly right!" Pip beamed. "That difference has a special name. We call it density β€” how tightly packed the little pieces of a thing are. A pebble has its bits jammed up close together. Cotton candy is mostly air, puffed up with just a little sugar."

He turned to the big brass telescope tilted toward the window. "Now β€” imagine an entire planet made mostly of air."

"WHAT?" said both children at once.

"Astronomers just found two of them, one thousand one hundred and ten light-years away. Each one is as big as Jupiter β€” huge! β€” but so wispy and fluffy that if you cut out a piece, it would feel like a puff of shaving foam fresh from the can. Not even hydrogen and helium gas can hold itself together very tightly out there."

Mia's eyes went wide. "So if I went there, I'd just… sink through it?"

"Oh my whiskers, that IS the marvelous question," said Pip. "The gas would get thicker as you fell β€” first like fog, then like syrup, then like honey. But at the very top? Yes. You'd sink like a stone falling into a bowl of pancake batter. Slowly. Slowly. Slowly."

"So they're PLANET-shaped clouds," said Leo. "Like… cosmic marshmallows."

"Precisely!" Pip clapped his paws. "Astronomers call them super-puffs. Out of nearly six thousand three hundred planets we've found beyond our solar system, fewer than forty are like this. They're probably white or pale blue. Never pink, sadly." He gave the cotton candy one last regretful look.

He set the pebble and the fluff side by side on the desk. "The universe made two things the same size, but one is so much lighter than the other. That means the universe is thinking in densities β€” and now, so are we."

He handed each child a small feather and a small pebble. "Off you go. See how many things around your house are secretly puffier than they look."

The News: Back in December 1985, a geologist named Mike Thomson chipped a strange curved bone out of a rocky Antarctic island and shipped it home. Nobody knew quite what it was, so it sat in a wooden drawer at the British Antarctic Survey for FORTY YEARS. This week, scientists at London's Natural History Museum finally identified it: the tail bone of a titanosaur β€” a long-necked, plant-eating dinosaur that lived 83 million years ago. It's the first-ever dinosaur bone dug up in Antarctica, and it changes how scientists think dinosaurs traveled between South America and Australia when the continents were still stuck together.

The museum backroom smelled of old wood and older secrets. Professor Pip padded down the aisle between rows of tall cabinets, his tail swishing softly. Mia and Leo followed close behind, ducking under a lamp that hung on a brass chain.

"Adventure today, my fellow scientists, is NOT out in the rainforest," Pip whispered. "It's right here." He tapped a drawer. "How many mysteries do you think are sleeping inside this room?"

"A hundred?" Leo guessed.

"Try millions," said Pip, sliding open the drawer with a slow, creaky shwoooomp. Inside, on tissue paper, lay a long curved bone the size of a small loaf of bread. Dust motes drifted in the lamplight.

He lifted it out very carefully, magnifying glass in one paw. "This bone was dug out of Antarctica in the year 1985. A rocky little island called James Ross. A kind geologist named Mike Thomson picked it up and wrote in his notebook, 'large reptile.' Then he packed it up and sent it home to sit in a drawer. For forty years."

"WHY?" Mia was aghast.

"Because he didn't know what he had," said Pip gently. "Nobody did. Not yet."

He turned the bone slowly in the light. "See this hollow, and this little ridge? Just this year, a scientist named Mark opened this drawer, looked inside, and said, 'Oh my whiskers β€” this isn't a sea reptile at all.' He compared it to hundreds of other bones, and it turned out to be part of the tail of a titanosaur. A gigantic long-necked, leaf-eating dinosaur that lived here 83 million years ago."

"There were DINOSAURS in Antarctica?" said Leo.

"Antarctica wasn't always ice, my dear," Pip beamed. "Back then it was warm forests, ferns, and rivers, all glued together with South America and Australia into one gigantic supercontinent called Gondwana. Dinosaurs could walk across the whole thing. This little tail bone is a footprint of that journey β€” proof that titanosaurs strolled from one continent to another using Antarctica as a bridge."

"Like stepping stones," Mia whispered.

"Precisely! Continent-sized stepping stones." Pip laid the bone carefully back on its tissue. "And here's the marvelous, marvelous thing. The bone didn't change. The scientists changed. They came back with sharper eyes and better computers and a new question. And the answer had been waiting in the drawer the whole time."

He looked around at the rows of quiet cabinets and gave a happy little sigh. "Museums aren't attics, you know. They're time machines with drawers."

Pip handed each of them a small pocket magnifying glass. "Now… who wants to go open another drawer?"
