A Dinosaur Was Hiding in a Museum Drawer for 40 Years!
The News: Scientists just announced that a bone collected in Antarctica way back in 1985 — and stored in a museum drawer ever since — is actually the first dinosaur ever found on the icy continent. It belonged to a titanosaur , a giant long-necked plant-eater that lived about 82 million years ago. Nobody noticed until a scientist named Mark Evans peeked in the drawer and thought, "hmm… that bone looks a bit dinosaur-y."
A Story from Professor Pip's Science Discovery

Professor Pip adjusted his crooked spectacles and clambered up onto a small wooden step-stool. He was in the very back room of a natural history museum, where enormous wooden drawers stretched from floor to ceiling — hundreds and hundreds of them, all full of secrets.

"Aha! Here we are," he whispered, sliding open a drawer marked with a faded label. Inside, nestled in beige foam, sat a chunky, knobbly bone about the size of a small pineapple.

Mia and Leo climbed up beside him, tiptoes wobbling.

"That looks like a rock, Professor Pip," said Leo.

"Precisely! And that," said Pip, tail swishing, "is why it hid from us for forty years."

He pulled two more bones from his lab coat pocket: a leftover chicken drumstick bone from lunch, and a lizard leg bone from his shelf. He laid them side by side.

"Look closely. Very closely."

Mia squinted. "They… they kind of look the same."

"They DO look the same! Until —" Pip whipped out his magnifying glass — "you look at the bumpy bits. Every animal has slightly different bumps where its muscles attached. The chicken has these tiny ridges. The lizard has smoother ones. Comparing bones bump-by-bump like this is called comparative anatomy."

Leo giggled. "That sounds like a spelling test."

"It sounds harder than it is!" laughed Pip. "It's really just — this bone versus that bone, who has more in common? For forty years, scientists thought this Antarctic bone belonged to a big sea reptile, because Antarctica is icy. Nobody expected a dinosaur down there. But when they compared its bumps to titanosaur bumps — MATCH!"

"Oh!" gasped Mia. "It's like when I told Grandpa his old rock was just a rock, but it was actually a fossil!"

"Exactly right!" beamed Pip. "And here's the very best part — 82 million years ago, Antarctica wasn't icy at all. It was covered in forests. Giant plant-eating dinosaurs walked around munching leaves right where the penguins live now."

He looked around at all the closed drawers stretching into the dim. "Just imagine, my dears. Who knows how many more dinosaurs are waiting in these drawers, patient as stones, hoping someone will finally look?"

Mia squeezed the chicken bone in her palm. "Professor Pip? I'm gonna look at EVERY bone from dinner tonight."

"Now you're thinking like a paleontologist," Pip said, and gently closed the drawer.

Robots Dive Deep and Find 31 Brand-New Sea Creatures!
The News: A team of scientists sent a robot submarine called SuBastian deep into the ocean off the coast of Brazil, into a shadowy layer of water called the midwater zone. In just two weeks, they found 31 sea creatures nobody had ever seen before — including one so strange, scientists are calling it a "Frankenstein organism." It might not even fit into any group of animals we already know.

Twilight had settled over the porch. Professor Pip crouched beside a shallow tin tray filled with dark water, patting his gadget pockets. "Ah! Perfect timing," he said, pulling out a tiny brass flashlight, a chemistry flask that glowed gently green, and a fistful of paper cutouts snipped into curious shapes.

Mia, Leo, and their friend Asha knelt in the porch light, cheeks pink from running about.

"Tonight," Pip announced, tail curling with excitement, "we're going where sunlight never goes."

"Underground?" tried Leo.

"Down, yes — but into WATER. Into the middle of the ocean." Pip clicked off the porch light. The tray of water went nearly black. "This tray is my little pretend ocean. Sunlight only reaches the top few hundred feet. Below that…"

He clicked on the flashlight. Its beam sliced through the dark water and lit up the bottom of the tray. "Below that, it's darker than the deepest closet. Almost the whole ocean, all the way down, is like this. Scientists call it the midwater zone, and it's the biggest living space on our whole planet."

"The BIGGEST?" said Asha.

"BIGGER than every forest, every desert, every mountain — combined!" said Pip, whiskers twitching. He dropped the glowing green flask into the water. Everyone gasped as soft light rippled out. "And down there, lots of creatures make their own light. It's called bioluminescence."

He sprinkled the paper cutouts across the surface. One was a long wiggly ribbon. One had many arms. One looked like a chain of tiny beads.

"This wiggly one," Pip said, tapping the ribbon, "is called a gossamer worm — it drifts its whole life. And THIS chain? It's not one animal at all. It's a siphonophore — hundreds of tiny animals stuck together, all working like one big creature."

"WHAT?" laughed Mia. "That's like a soccer team pretending to be one giant monster!"

"Exactly right!" cried Pip. "And the robot found ONE siphonophore so strange, it might be a whole new family of animals. It's why the scientists nicknamed it a 'Frankenstein organism.'"

Leo peered into the tray as the tiny cutouts drifted around the glow. "Professor Pip? How many more monsters are down there?"

Pip looked out toward the dark garden, tail slowly swishing. "Nobody knows, my dear. Maybe ninety out of every hundred kinds of ocean creature — we haven't met yet. The whole ocean is waiting."

He handed each of them a fresh paper cutout and some scissors. "Now YOU try. Design a creature nobody has ever seen. Give it lots of arms. Give it lights. Give it whatever wild shape you like. Because down there? Anything is possible."

Bumblebees Lick Their Lips When They Like a Treat!
The News: Scientists filmed bumblebees in super slow motion and made a surprising discovery: when a bee tastes something sweet, it sticks out its little tongue like it's licking its lips. When it tastes something bitter, it shakes its head and wipes its mouth with its front legs — the same yucky-face reactions we have! The study, published in a scientific journal called PNAS, was the first to show that insects may have feelings we can actually see on their faces.

The wildflower meadow buzzed with warm afternoon sun. Professor Pip crouched beside a wooden bench where he had set out two tiny white ceramic saucers. One was full of golden honey-water. The other was full of dark, briny bitter-water.

"Oh my whiskers," he chuckled, pulling his big brass magnifying glass out of his lab coat pocket. "Come see this, my scientists. Very carefully now — no sudden moves."

Mia and Beatrix tiptoed over and crouched down. A fat, fuzzy bumblebee landed on the rim of the honey saucer. She dipped her long, straw-like tongue in.

"Watch her face," whispered Pip. "Watch."

The bee finished sipping, lifted her head — and her tiny pink tongue flicked out again, curling. Then again. Almost like… well…

"Professor Pip! She's LICKING HER LIPS!" hissed Mia, hands to her mouth.

"Precisely! Just wait." Another bee wobbled over to the second saucer, poked her tongue into the bitter-water, and immediately —

SHAKE. SHAKE. WIPE. She jerked her head back and forth and scrubbed her mouth with her front legs. Then she zoomed away in a huff.

Beatrix squealed. "She did NOT like that one!"

"She most certainly did not!" cried Pip, tail swishing. "Scientists in China and Australia used slow-motion cameras to film bees doing this over and over again — 18 whole colonies! And every single time, sweet food got a lip-lick. Bitter food got a head-shake and a mouth-wipe. Scientists call those little face movements orofacial behaviors — which is just a big word for 'face-feelings.'"

"But…" Beatrix scrunched her nose, "bees are so tiny. Do tiny animals really feel things?"

Pip's eyes softened. He tapped the magnifying glass. "That's the biggest question in the study, my dear. For a very long time, scientists thought only big animals — like dogs, or elephants, or people — could like things and dislike things. But if a bee's face acts EXACTLY the way YOUR face acts when you taste broccoli —"

"BLEH!" said Mia, sticking out her tongue.

"— then maybe, just maybe, bees feel a little something too."

Beatrix looked at the meadow full of drifting bees, quiet for a moment. "Oh! It's like when I don't like green olives, but I DO like grapes."

"Exactly right!" beamed Pip. "You've been telling the whole world your feelings with your face this whole time — and now we know bees might too."

He passed each of them a magnifying glass from his pocket. "Now you try. Go and find a bee — very very gently — and watch her face. She might just be smiling at you."
