The News: This week NASA's James Webb Space Telescope turned four years old, and to celebrate, scientists released the sharpest picture ever taken of a galaxy called Centaurus A — a swirl of stars, dust, and jets shaped by a giant galactic collision that happened about two billion years ago.
A Story from Professor Pip's Science Discovery

Professor Pip stepped out onto the porch just as the last streak of sunset faded from the sky. He adjusted his crooked spectacles, patted his bulging green lab-coat pockets, and pulled out two small glass bowls — one full of shimmery blue powder, one full of glittery orange dust.

"Ah! Just the pair," he murmured, setting them on the little wooden table. Behind him, his small brass telescope stood ready on its tripod.

Mia, Leo, and their friend Asha padded up the porch steps and settled cross-legged on the wood.

"Today," Professor Pip announced, his fluffy tail swishing behind him, "we're going to learn what happens when whole galaxies bump into each other!"

"Galaxies?!" gasped Mia. "The big twirly kind full of stars?"
"You mean they can CRASH?" said Leo.

Professor Pip nodded solemnly. "The question is — what happens when they do?"

He tilted the blue bowl into a slow, gentle swirl. Then, cupping the orange bowl close, he tipped them together. Shimmery clouds of blue and orange curled, mixed, and spun into a swirling spiral right there between his paws.

"OOOH!" the children breathed.

"You see?" Professor Pip whispered. "They don't just bounce off. They twirl together and become something new. That is called a galactic merger."

He held up a small photograph card — a picture just released this week by a giant space telescope called James Webb, which turned four years old this week. It showed a galaxy called Centaurus A, glowing with dust and stars and one bright, bright center.

"About two billion years ago," Professor Pip said, "two galaxies crashed together — right there. What we see now, this whole tangled tapestry of stars and dust, is the swirl from that ancient bump. And deep in the middle sits a supermassive black hole — a place so heavy that even light can't run away from it!"

"Oh!" cried Asha. "Like when I stirred my chocolate milk into my sister's strawberry milk!"

Professor Pip beamed and clapped his little paws. "Exactly right! Except instead of milk, it's stars and gas and dust — enough to fill a billion suns."

He looked up. The first stars were pricking through the twilight. "Just imagine, my dear scientists — every one of those tiny lights up there might one day dance into another light, and swirl together for ages and ages."

He handed each child a little jar of colored sugar and a stirring stick. "Now you try. See if you can make your very own galaxy swirl. And when you're done, we'll hunt for Centaurus A through the telescope."

A 125-Million-Year-Old Shark Was Finally Filmed Alive
The News: Scientists from the University of Hawaiʻi and the Minderoo-UWA Deep-Sea Research Center just filmed a goblin shark alive in the wild for the very first time — one near a Pacific seamount and another in the Tonga Trench, nearly 700 meters deeper than anyone had ever seen this shark live. The species has been drifting through the deep sea, almost unchanged, for about 125 million years.

Professor Pip's cozy lab glowed with warm amber lamplight. He adjusted his crooked spectacles, patted the bulging pockets of his forest-green lab coat, and pulled out a stack of colored cardstock plates — bright sunlit blue on top, then teal, then deep indigo, and finally inky black at the bottom.

"Ah! Just what I need," he said, laying them down like a very tall cake. "Come see, come see!"

Mia and Leo hurried over, wide-eyed.

"Today," Professor Pip announced, his tail swishing, "we're going to visit a shark that has been hiding for one hundred and twenty-five million years!"

"WHAT?!" cried Leo. "That's older than most of the dinosaurs!"
"Where does it live?" whispered Mia.

Professor Pip tapped the stack of cardstock. "Right down here," he said, pointing to the very darkest, bottom-most plate. "This is the ocean, cut into slices. The top is where sunlight can reach. But way, way, WAY down — nearly a mile deep — everything is black as ink, colder than a freezer, and the water pushes on you with the weight of a whole car! That is called the deep sea."

He held up a tiny paper cutout — a shark with a long, pointy snout and jaws on a springy little tab.

"Meet the goblin shark. And just this week, scientists near Hawaii and near the Tonga Trench filmed a living one in the wild for the very first time!"

"You mean nobody had ever seen one alive before?" Leo asked.

"Only ones caught by fishing lines by accident and pulled up," Professor Pip said, gently pushing the paper shark's jaw. It sprang forward with a soft snap! "This is how they catch dinner — their jaws pop out like a tiny drawer!"

"Whoa!" laughed Mia. "Like the frog on my slap bracelet!"

"Precisely!" Professor Pip beamed. "And here is the wonder of it, my dear scientists: the goblin shark is called a living fossil. That means it looks almost exactly the same as its great-great-great-great-great-great-grandshark did over a hundred million years ago. It hardly changed at all."

He looked over at the glow of his fish tank. "Somewhere down there, in the dark, one of these old, old creatures is drifting past a lantern-shaped fish, not knowing that up here, we finally saw it swim."

Professor Pip handed each child a tiny flashlight and a piece of blue tissue paper. "Now you try. Shine your light through the paper — pretend you're a deep-sea scientist searching for a goblin shark. What do you find in the shadows?"

A Baby Dinosaur Was Found Hiding Inside a Rock — Without Cracking It Open
The News: Scientists in Korea and Texas just announced a brand-new baby dinosaur species — the very first new Korean dinosaur in fifteen years, and the first ever found in Korea with parts of its skull still there. They named it Doolysaurus, after a much-loved Korean cartoon dinosaur. And here's the wild part: instead of chipping the rock open, they used a special scanner to peek inside without breaking a thing.

Professor Pip set a chunky brown rock on his workbench and grinned. He adjusted his crooked spectacles, patted his bulging green lab-coat pockets, and pulled out a small brass flashlight — and then a wobbly block of pale amber jelly, with a tiny toy dinosaur nestled inside it like a raisin in a bun.

"Ah! Just what I need," he said. "Come see, come see!"

Mia, Leo, and their friend Theo crowded around the workbench.

"Today," Professor Pip announced, his tail swishing, "we're going to peek inside a rock — without breaking it!"

"Without breaking it?!" gasped Theo. "But how would you see what's inside?"

Professor Pip winked. He held up the amber jelly block. "The jelly is our pretend rock. The little dinosaur inside is our pretend fossil. Now watch closely."

He clicked on the brass flashlight and shone it right through the jelly. A soft glow spread across a piece of white paper on the other side — and there, in perfect silhouette, was the tiny dinosaur!

"WHOA!" all three children cried.

"You see?" Professor Pip whispered. "Even though the jelly is solid, some of the light can pass right through it. When light passes through something, it can show us the shape of anything hiding inside!"

He carefully turned the jelly block. The little dinosaur shadow twisted too.

"That trick, in real life, is called a CT scan — that stands for computed tomography. Instead of a flashlight, scientists use tiny gentle X-rays that pass through solid rock. A computer stitches all the shadows together and — presto! — a three-dimensional picture of whatever is hiding inside."

He tapped his pocket notebook, which was open to a small pencil sketch of a friendly baby dinosaur. "And just this week, scientists in Korea used a very tiny CT scanner on a chunk of rock from Aphae Island. Inside, they found the very first baby dinosaur skull ever discovered in Korea — the first new Korean dinosaur in fifteen years! They named it Doolysaurus, after a beloved Korean cartoon dinosaur named Dooly."

"Doolysaurus?!" Leo laughed. "That's the best name!"

"Precisely!" said Professor Pip. "And here is the marvelous thing — chipping that rock away with a chisel would have taken years and years. But with the scanner, they could see the whole little skull in just a few months, without so much as a scratch."

Mia's eyes went round. "So it's like… reading a book without opening the cover?"

Professor Pip's whiskers twitched with delight. "Exactly right, my dear scientist!"

He handed each child a piece of tissue paper and a little pebble. "Now you try. Tuck the pebble inside the tissue, then hold it up to the sun. What can you see through the paper? Every wrapped-up secret has a shadow waiting to be found."
