A peanut-shaped asteroid that just can't spin straight
The News: NASA's Lucy spacecraft zoomed past a small asteroid named Donaldjohanson (yes, really!) and discovered it's shaped like a peanut — two bumps joined by a skinny middle — and it tumbles end-over-end every 10.5 Earth days while also wobbling sideways every 26.5 days. It's about 5 miles long, 155 million years old, and made from two pieces of a much bigger asteroid that drifted back together long ago.

Professor Pip pushed his crooked spectacles up his nose and patted his bulging green coat pockets. "Where is it… ah-HA!" He pulled out a small peanut, still in its shell, and held it up. From another pocket came a smooth, round acorn. From a third — his small brass telescope, gleaming gold in the lantern light.

A few children sat in the soft grass at the top of the hill. The sky above them was slowly turning purple, and the first stars were just beginning to wink awake.

"Tonight," Professor Pip announced, his bushy tail swishing, "we're going to learn about an asteroid named Donaldjohanson — and why it can't seem to spin straight!"

"Donald-who?" giggled Leo, scrunching his nose.

"Donaldjohanson!" Pip repeated, beaming. "He's a real chunk of space rock — about as long as a city. NASA sent a spacecraft called Lucy zooming past him to take a peek. And what Lucy found was very strange indeed."

He held up the smooth acorn. "Most asteroids are roundish, like this — they spin nicely, around and around." He gave it a twirl on his paw. The acorn whirled smoothly.

Then he held up the peanut. "But Donaldjohanson looks like THIS — two bumps connected by a skinny middle, like a peanut in its shell!"

He gave the peanut a flick. It tumbled wildly across the grass — over, around, over, around — wobbling end over end. The children gasped and laughed.

"Why does it wobble?" asked Mia, eyes wide.

"Precisely the right question!" said Pip. "When an object has two lumps far apart, it can't spin smoothly. It tumbles — like trying to spin a pencil and a basketball glued together. That tumbling motion is called rotation, and a wobble like Donaldjohanson's is what scientists call a complex rotation."

He held up his pocket notebook. "Lucy clocked Donaldjohanson rolling end-over-end once every ten and a half Earth days, AND wobbling sideways once every twenty-six and a half days. Two wobbles at once!"

"Like when I try to spin a banana!" Leo blurted.

"Exactly right!" laughed Pip. "Curiouser still, scientists think Donaldjohanson is two old broken pieces of an even bigger asteroid that drifted back together long ago. The two lumps are the two pieces — gently stuck by their own gravity."

He looked up at the glittering stars. "Imagine that. A whole little world, broken and rejoined, tumbling quietly through space for one hundred and fifty-five million years."

He pressed the peanut into Mia's paw. "Now you try. Find anything in your kitchen that's lumpy and uneven — a banana, a pretzel, a spoon — and give it a spin. Watch how it wobbles. That's the same dance Donaldjohanson does, just a billion times slower."

The News: In the Ecuadorian Amazon, scientists discovered a brand-new spider — Taczanowskia waska — that disguises itself as a parasitic fungus called Gibellula , which normally GROWS on dead spiders. The disguise is so convincing that trained bug scientists thought it was a mushroom. The species was first spotted from a photo posted on the citizen-science app iNaturalist.

Professor Pip crouched low on a mossy log, his bushy tail curled neatly behind him, magnifying glass raised in one paw. "Ssshhh," he whispered to the children behind him. "Look very carefully. Do you see it?"

The kids leaned in. On the side of the log, a small curling tan-and-white shape stuck up like a tiny twisted mushroom.

"That's a mushroom," whispered Asha.

"Mmm," said Professor Pip, tail swishing. "That is what it WANTS you to think." He grinned, his crooked spectacles slipping down his nose. "Watch."

He tapped the log gently with one claw. The "mushroom" twitched — and suddenly eight legs unfolded. The children gasped! It was a SPIDER, pretending to be a mushroom.

"Oh my whiskers!" squealed Mia.

"This little fellow is called Taczanowskia waska," said Pip proudly. "Scientists found him brand-new in the Amazon rainforest. And here's what makes him special — he is pretending to be a parasitic fungus called Gibellula. A fungus that normally GROWS on spiders!"

"Wait," said Leo, scrunching his face. "A spider… pretending to be the thing that EATS spiders?"

"Precisely!" Pip clapped his paws. "It's the funniest trick a scientist could imagine. If a hungry bird flies by and sees what looks like a Gibellula sprout, the bird thinks, 'Yuck. Old moldy spider. Pass.' And our little Taczanowskia just stays still, holding his disguise, hidden in plain sight."

He pulled out his pocket notebook and pencil. "This trick has a name. It's called mimicry — when one creature copies the look of another to fool predators. Stick insects do it. Some moths do it. Even some snakes do it."

He pointed at the spider's pale curling abdomen. "Look at how his body is shaped just like a fungus sprout. He even hangs out on the underside of leaves — the exact same spot where the real fungus grows. He's not just borrowing the costume. He's chosen the right STAGE."

"It's like when I wear my big brother's hoodie and pretend I'm him!" said Asha.

"Exactly right!" laughed Pip. "Only this little spider has been practicing for millions of years."

Pip stood up slowly, careful not to disturb the disguise. "And here's the curiouser-and-curiouser part. The scientists nearly missed him — even trained bug scientists thought he was a mushroom! It took someone with a phone, taking a photo on a nature app, to notice the 'mushroom' had little eyes. That's how this whole new species was discovered."

He smiled at the children. "Now I wonder — next time you walk in your garden, see if you can find a creature pretending to be something else. A moth pretending to be a leaf. A bug pretending to be a stick. Nature is full of master actors. You just have to look very, very slowly."

The News: For 66 years, a Vietnam veteran named Richard Rock kept a curling little fossil on his shelf labeled "baby lamprey." A new study in Science shows it's actually a hatchling embolomere — a crocodile-like creature that lived 280–350 million years ago. The fossil has tiny legs and no external gills, which means it was born looking like a tiny adult — not a tadpole. That changes what scientists thought about how early animals first crawled from water onto land.

Professor Pip knelt on a sandy riverbank, gently sweeping his tiny fossil brush across a small reddish stone. Swish… swish… swish. Bit by bit, the brush uncovered a curling shape pressed into the rock — like a tiny lizard, frozen in time.

"There," he whispered, his crooked spectacles slipping down. "Hello, little friend."

Mia and Leo sat cross-legged beside him, notebooks open.

"Today," said Professor Pip, tail swishing, "we're going to talk about a mystery that took sixty-six years to solve. And to solve it, we need to think about how babies grow up."

He reached into another pocket and carefully placed a small glass jar on the rock. Inside, a wriggly brown tadpole zipped around. The kids leaned in.

"This," said Pip, "is a tadpole. What does it become when it grows up?"

"A FROG!" yelled Leo.

"Precisely! And does the tadpole look like a baby frog?"

"No," said Mia. "It's all tail and squishy. Frogs have legs!"

"Exactly right!" said Pip. "A tadpole has to completely rebuild its body — grow legs, shrink its tail, change its mouth, swap from gills to lungs. That huge body-rebuild is called metamorphosis."

He tapped the fossil with his pencil. "Now look at this little fellow. For sixty-six years, a kind man named Mr. Rock had this rock on his shelf with a label that said 'baby lamprey.' Lampreys are eel-shaped fish with no legs. But scientists looked at it very carefully — and what do you think they found?"

He picked up his magnifying glass and held it over the fossil. "Tiny little LEGS! Four of them. And no feathery gills. This wasn't a baby fish at all."

"What was it?" gasped Mia.

"A baby embolomere," said Pip with a flourish. "A crocodile-like creature that lived three hundred million years ago. And the curiouser-and-curiouser part is this — the baby looks just like a tiny version of the grown-up. Not a tadpole stage. Not a body that needs rebuilding. Just a little crocodile-y critter that grew bigger and bigger and BIGGER."

He turned a page in his notebook. "That's called direct development. It's how YOU grew up. You were a tiny human baby, then a bigger baby, then a kid — same body, just bigger."

"Like puppies and kittens!" said Leo.

"Precisely!" said Pip. "And here's why this is enormous news. Scientists used to think the very first animals to crawl out of water onto land were like frogs — water babies that metamorphosed into land grown-ups. But this little fossil whispers, 'Nope. Some early land animals were born already looking like the adults.'"

Pip looked up at the slow brown river, then at the sky. "It changes the whole story of how we came to walk on land."

He pressed a smooth pebble into each child's paw. "Now I wonder — find a picture of yourself as a baby, and a picture of yourself today. Are you a tadpole-becoming-a-frog, or a little human who just got bigger? Which kind of animal are you?"
