A 12-Billion-Year-Old Snowball Just Zoomed Through Our Sky
The News: Astronomers using NASA's James Webb Space Telescope just figured out something amazing about a comet called 3I/ATLAS that visited our solar system last year. After studying the chemicals in its icy "tail," scientists think this comet may be 10 to 12 billion years old — almost as old as the universe itself, and nearly three times older than our Sun. It came from a totally different star, in a very cold corner of our galaxy.
A Story from Professor Pip's Science Discovery

Professor Pip adjusted his slightly crooked spectacles and squinted up at the deepening sky. The first stars were beginning to wink on above the hilltop. "Ah! Perfect timing," he said, patting his bulging green lab coat until he found what he needed — a small, frosty snowball, tucked in beside his brass telescope.

Mia and Leo sat cross-legged on a picnic blanket, looking up.

"Tonight," Pip whispered, his fluffy tail swishing, "we are going to think about something very, very old."

"How old?" asked Mia.

"Older than this hill. Older than the ocean. Older than… our Sun." Pip's tail swished again. Mia and Leo's mouths popped open.

"Older than the Sun?" Leo gasped.

Pip held up the small snowball. "This snowball is just from yesterday's weather, fresh and easy. But out beyond the planets, way past the cold black where light is faint, there are snowballs that have been frozen for billions of years. They drift, slow and quiet, sometimes spiraling toward a sun. We call those — comets."

A single soft streak of light slipped across the sky.

"Just like that one," Pip whispered. "When a comet swings close to the Sun, the ice warms up and turns to gas. That glowing tail is the comet's old, old chemicals — finally waking up. So a comet," he said, pointing his pencil at the sky, "is a time capsule. The ice inside has been frozen since before the Sun was even born."

"Like a sandwich in the back of the freezer!" said Mia, eyes shining. "It still tastes the same forever, because it never warmed up!"

"Precisely right!" Pip beamed. "Last year, a comet called 3I/ATLAS visited us from another star. The James Webb Space Telescope tasted its chemicals — and they were so old, so different, that scientists think it formed almost twelve billion years ago. Long, long, long before our Sun."

Pip looked up. "Somewhere out there, while dinosaurs hadn't even been imagined, that little snowball was already drifting." He pulled out his pocket notebook and a pencil. "Now — draw it for me. Draw what an ancient traveler looks like."

A Tiny Spider Builds a Spring-Loaded Catapult to Catch Ants
The News: Scientists from Macquarie University in Australia just discovered a brand-new spider deep in the rainforests of Queensland. It's so small you could miss it — but it builds a tiny spring-loaded snare out of silk. When a green tree ant comes by and bites the snare, BOING! — the trap fires the ant up into the spider's web at 15 g's , which is more than the strongest force a jet pilot ever feels. They nicknamed it the "ballista" spider.
A Story from Professor Pip's Science Discovery

"Watch this very carefully," whispered Professor Pip, sliding his crooked spectacles up his nose. He had crouched down in a sunny clearing, and Mia and Leo had crowded close. In his paws, Pip held a long, thin, green twig — and he was slowly bending it into a curve.

"Now, friends — when I let go—"

He let go. TWAAANG! The twig snapped straight, whacking a leaf and showering them with a tiny rain of dust. Both children jumped, then burst into giggles.

"It zoomed!" cried Mia.

"Indeed it did," said Pip. "But here's the wonderful question — where was that zoom hiding the whole time I was holding the twig still?"

Leo thought. "Inside the bent part?"

"Curiouser and curiouser, exactly right." Pip's tail flicked. "When you bend something springy, you sneak energy into it. The twig wants to be straight — and the bending stores up all that 'wanting.' The moment you let go… the wanting becomes motion. We call that elastic potential energy. Elastic like a rubber band, potential meaning it's stored up and waiting."

"That's so cool," Mia whispered.

"Now — far, far away in an Australian rainforest," Pip said, lowering his voice as if telling a secret, "there is a spider smaller than your fingernail. And this spider has invented something. It spends hours every night spinning silk into a careful cone shape, with the lines pulled tighter and tighter and tighter — just like my twig. All that 'wanting' is hidden inside the silk."

"And then?" Leo asked.

"And then it waits. A big green tree ant marches by. The ant bites the silk… and BOING! The whole snare un-bends at once. That ant goes flying up into the spider's web at 15 g's." Pip's tail puffed up. "That is fifteen times the strongest force a jet pilot ever feels in their seat!"

"Like a slingshot!" said Leo.

"Precisely! And here's the most curious part: this spider only catches one kind of ant — green tree ants. Probably because those ants travel in big angry crowds, so the spider has to pick them off one at a time, very safely, very precisely."

Pip looked up into the tree canopy. "All that engineering… in a creature smaller than your fingernail." He pulled out three rubber bands and handed them to the children. "Now you go try."

A Sea Cucumber's Tiny "Toes" Keep Living for Three Whole Years
The News: Marine biologists in Newfoundland, Canada were moving a scarlet sea cucumber between tanks when they noticed something strange: a few of its tiny "tube feet" had fallen off and were just sitting at the bottom. They expected them to rot away. Instead, the little detached tube feet kept absorbing food from the seawater… and lived on their own for more than three years .

"Now this," said Professor Pip, kneeling carefully at the edge of a glittering tide pool, "is a question I find delicious."

He held up his chemistry flask — full of clear, salty seawater — and squinted at it through his crooked spectacles. Mia and Leo leaned in. The flask sloshed gently.

"Here is the question, my friends. What does it mean for something to be alive?"

"Like… it breathes?" Mia guessed.

"It moves?" Leo offered.

"Lovely, lovely answers — but let's try something tricky." Pip patted his pockets and produced a small green leaf cutting and a tiny glass of water. "I just clipped this leaf off a stem. Is it alive?"

"Hmm…" said Mia.

"If I drop it in water…" Pip plopped the leaf into the glass, "…and put it in a sunny window, what happens?"

"It grows roots!" Leo said. "My mom does that!"

"Precisely! A piece of plant, snipped off, can still drink and grow new things. We call that regeneration — the power of living things to repair themselves, or even rebuild from a small piece." Pip's tail swished happily. "And now — let me tell you about a creature called a sea cucumber."

"Sea cucumber?" Mia giggled. "Is it a vegetable?"

"Not at all," Pip chuckled. "A sea cucumber is a soft, sausage-shaped ocean creature — a cousin to sea stars. It scoots along the seafloor on hundreds of tiny tube feet." He pointed at the seawater. "And here's what scientists in Canada just discovered. A sea cucumber dropped a few of its tube feet at the bottom of a tank. The scientists thought, 'oh, those will rot in a few days.' But they didn't. They kept on living."

"On their own?" Leo gasped.

"On their own. For three whole years." Pip's spectacles slipped down his nose. "The little tube feet cleaned up their cut edges, made new cells, drank tiny food from the water — even when buried in mud."

"Like a starfish growing back its arm?" Mia tried.

"Exactly right! Some creatures are so good at being alive, that even a small piece of them keeps going. The scientists nicknamed it 'the zombie project' — because tissue isn't supposed to live without its body." Pip looked down at the tide pool, where tiny anemones swayed. "Inside something as quiet as a sea cucumber's toe… there's a living recipe we're only just beginning to read."
