Meet the Tiny Dinosaur That Flew Like a Squirrel
The News: Scientists in China just described a brand-new feathered dinosaur called Jian changmaensis . About the size of a barn owl, it lived 120 million years ago and had long feathers on its arms and its legs — giving it four wings instead of two. They think it couldn't really flap-fly, but it could glide from tree to tree, just like a flying squirrel. It may even have hunted some of the very first birds.
A Story from Professor Pip's Science Discovery

Professor Pip adjusted his slightly crooked spectacles and patted the bulging pockets of his green lab coat. Out came a pair of folded paper wings, a roll of string, and a wide grin.

"Today, my fellow scientists," he announced, his bushy tail swishing behind him, "we're learning about a dinosaur that flew without flying!"

"That doesn't make sense!" giggled Mia.

"How do you fly without flying?" said Leo, scrunching up his nose.

"Curiouser and curiouser," Pip beamed. "Help me strap these on." He carefully tied a small paper wing to each of his front paws — and then, with a tiny "ah-HA!", he tied two MORE paper wings to his back paws.

"You have four wings!" Mia gasped.

"Precisely!" said Pip, climbing onto a low mossy log. "A team of fellow scientists in China just dug up a dinosaur shaped like THIS. They named it Jian changmaensis. About the size of a barn owl, it had long feathers on its arms AND its legs."

He hopped. WHOOSH! Pip drifted in a slow, lopsided arc and plopped softly into a pile of pine needles, tail puffing up like a feather duster.

"Did you FLY?" Asha asked, eyes huge.

"Not quite, my dear. I glided. There's a big difference." He scrambled up, dusting needles off his coat. "Flapping flight needs muscles strong enough to push air down hard. Gliding is more like… falling in slow motion."

"Like a paper airplane!" said Leo.

"Exactly right!" said Pip. "Scientists think Jian climbed trees and leapt — and those four feathered wings caught the air, like a parachute and a paper plane all in one. Almost like a modern flying squirrel."

"But why FOUR wings?" Mia wondered.

Pip's spectacles slipped down his nose. "Ah! That's the prize-winning question. Dinosaurs were trying things. Some had longer arms. Some had feathers on their legs. Some had both! Evolution is like a giant science fair — every creature is an experiment, and the ones that work get passed down to babies, and babies' babies. The two-winged birds we know today are the great-great-great-great-grandchildren of a contest dinosaurs were holding in the trees a hundred million years ago."

He looked up at a robin hopping on a high branch. "Every bird you see is a tiny living dinosaur that won the gliding game."

Pip handed each child a paper airplane. "Now you try. Throw it gently. Watch how the wings catch the air. You're testing the same idea Jian tested 120 million years ago."

Astronomers Just Found Planets Fluffier Than Cotton Candy
The News: Astronomers found two enormous planets that are lighter than cotton candy . The pair, called TOI-791 b and c, are about as big as Jupiter but as fluffy as shaving foam from the can. They live 1,110 light-years away around a star in the southern sky. Jupiter is up to 35 times heavier than these new featherweights! Scientists got such a long look at them because Antarctica had months of darkness, so telescopes there could watch the planets cross their star uninterrupted for 11 hours each.
A Story from Professor Pip's Science Discovery

The sun was just dipping behind the hills when Professor Pip rummaged in his pockets and pulled out the strangest pair of objects: a giant pink-and-blue cloud of cotton candy on a stick, and a tiny grey pebble.

"Tonight," he said, his crooked spectacles catching the last gold light, "we're learning a magic word. The word is density."

Mia tilted her head. "Density?"

"Yes! Density is how much stuff is squished into a space. Watch." Pip held the cotton candy up high. "This is BIG." He held the pebble out. "This is SMALL. Mia, which one do you think weighs more?"

"The cotton candy!" said Mia. "It's huge!"

"Hmmm. Leo, take them both."

Leo cupped one in each paw — and his face went funny. "But… the little stone is heavier!"

"PRECISELY!" said Pip, his tail swishing in a slow loop of delight. "Big things aren't always heavy. The cotton candy is mostly air. The stone is packed tight. We say the stone is more dense."

"Now," he said, pointing up at the very first bright dot in the twilight sky, "some fellow scientists just found two GIANT planets out there, way past where we can see, that are about as big as Jupiter — and Jupiter is huge, you could fit one thousand Earths inside it. But these new planets?" He gave the cotton candy a little squeeze. "They're this fluffy."

"NO!" said Mia. "A planet can't be like cotton candy!"

"Oh my whiskers, but it can. The scientists call them super-puffs. They're made almost entirely of two gases — hydrogen and helium — barely squished at all. If you could scoop up a piece, it would feel softer than shaving foam, fresh from the can."

Leo squinted up. "What color are they?"

"Probably white or pale blue. Not pink like the candy — sorry to disappoint." Pip grinned. "And here's the wonderful part. The scientists couldn't have spotted them without help from Antarctica."

"Antarctica?!" both children said at once.

"At the bottom of our Earth, in winter, the sun never rises for months. Months and months of dark sky. So telescopes there can stare at one little star for eleven hours straight, without ever waiting for sunrise. That's how long these planets take to slide across their star — eleven hours each!"

Pip looked up at the deepening night. "Somewhere up there, two enormous fluffy worlds are drifting around their star like soap bubbles. And we know they're there because of patient eyes on a frozen continent and a clever idea about how heavy things ought to be."

He handed each child a pinch of cotton candy and a tiny pebble. "Now you try. Hold them. Feel the difference. That's the secret the planet-hunters used."

Divers Find a Coral Older Than Your Country in a New Zealand Fjord
The News: Deep down in the cold, dark waters of Fiordland, New Zealand, marine biologists just found a HUGE black coral. It's about 4 meters (13 feet) tall — taller than your front door — and 4.5 meters (15 feet) wide. And here's the wild part: it's between 300 and 400 years old. That means this coral has been quietly growing in the dark since BEFORE the United States was even a country. Even though it's called black coral, the outside of the living animal is white — only the skeleton inside is black.

Professor Pip waddled down to the edge of the tide pool, his green lab coat splashed with seawater and a snorkel mask pushed up over his crooked spectacles. He plopped open his pocket notebook and pulled out a brass measuring tape with a satisfying CLICK.

"My fellow scientists," he said solemnly, "today we are going to imagine a tree that lives underwater."

"A tree?" said Mia. "In the OCEAN?"

"Sort of. Watch." Pip arranged a little bundle of branching twigs upright on a flat rock, then carefully wedged some smooth pebbles around the base. "Here's our model. Now I want each of you to guess — how tall is this little twig?"

"Ten centimeters?" said Beatrix.

"Closer to fifteen!" said Leo.

Pip stretched the brass tape out. "Beatrix's eye is sharp — about ten. Now imagine the REAL one. Some dive scientists just found a tree-shaped animal at the bottom of a fjord in New Zealand. Not ten centimeters. Not fifteen. Four meters. Taller than a front door."

"WHAT?" all three children said at once.

"And four and a half meters across!" Pip's tail puffed up. "Oh my whiskers — and it's a CORAL."

"Corals are animals though, right?" asked Mia carefully.

"Precisely right! A coral isn't a plant — it's a colony of thousands of tiny soft animals called polyps, all sharing one branching skeleton they built together. Like a town of tiny relatives stacked into a tree shape." He pointed at his twig model. "Each little stub is where a polyp lives."

"And the new big one — how OLD is it?" Beatrix asked.

Pip leaned in. "Are you ready?"

The kids nodded.

"Three. Hundred. To four hundred. Years. Old."

Leo's eyes went round. "That's older than my grandma!"

"Older than your grandma's grandma's grandma's grandma!" Pip cried. "When this coral was a tiny baby polyp, no one had invented the telephone, or the airplane, or even electric light bulbs. It has been growing in the dark, very, very slowly, the whole time."

"Why so slow?" Mia asked.

"Cold water and dim light. There's not much food down there, so the polyps build their skeleton one tiny crumb at a time." Pip held up a single pebble. "About the thickness of this, every year. A single year! That's why finding a HUGE one is such a big deal. It's a record book and a baby-maker — bigger corals can release more eggs and babies. The fellow scientists in New Zealand are mapping where the big ones live so boats know not to drop anchors on them."

"Like rangers protecting an old tree," Asha whispered.

"Exactly right." Pip looked out at the deep blue water. "Somewhere down there, an animal older than every person you know is quietly doing what it has always done — growing one tiny crumb at a time."

He handed each child a magnifying glass. "Now you try. Look at the twig model up close. Count the branches. Each one is a place where, on the real coral, thousands of tiny relatives are sharing a roof."
