NASA Plans a Permanent Moon Base — With Hopping Drones!
The News: NASA announced today that it is building a permanent base on the Moon. People will live there as early as 2032. The plan also includes brand-new hopping drones — four little robots that will leap, instead of roll, across the lunar surface to scout out the best spots to land big spacecraft. NASA's first Moon Base mission could launch as soon as the fall of 2026.

📚 A STORY FROM PROFESSOR PIP

Professor Pip adjusted his slightly crooked spectacles and patted his bulging green coat pockets. "Ah! Just what I need," he said, pulling out a small rubber ball and a coiled-up balloon.

Mia, Leo, and Asha sat cross-legged on the grass at the top of Bramble Hill. Above them, a fat orange Moon was peeking over the trees.

"Tonight," Pip announced, his fluffy tail swishing behind him, "we're going to learn why NASA is sending HOPPING robots to the Moon!"

"Hopping?!" gasped Mia. "Like rabbits?"

"Precisely!" Pip beamed. "But first — a question. If I drop this ball here on Bramble Hill…" He held the ball above his paw, then let it go. THUNK. "It falls fast, yes? That's because Earth is pulling on it. We call that pull gravity."

Leo nodded slowly. "And the Moon has gravity too, right?"

"Right you are! But the Moon is much smaller than Earth — so its gravity is only about one-sixth as strong." Pip's eyes sparkled. "Watch this." He tossed the ball up gently. "On Earth, the ball comes back FAST. But on the Moon, if I tossed the same ball with the same little flick…" Pip mimed a slow, looping toss with his paws. "It would float up, up, up — and come down s-l-o-w-l-y, like a feather."

"Whooooaa," whispered Asha.

"So!" Pip's whiskers twitched with excitement. "If you were a little robot trying to explore the Moon, would you rather ROLL on bumpy rocks…" — he wiggled a paw across the grass — "or HOP big, gentle hops over them?" He sprang into a tiny demonstration leap and tumbled into the grass, spectacles askew.

The kids burst into giggles. "HOP! Definitely HOP!" they chorused.

"Exactly right!" Pip popped back up. "Engineers at NASA had the same thought. So they're sending four small drones called MoonFall to bounce across the surface like moon-rabbits and pick the safest landing spots for the big base."

"Oh!" said Leo, eyes wide. "Like sending scouts ahead of a hiking trip!"

"Exactly right!" Pip clapped his paws.

He looked up at the Moon for a long quiet moment. "Imagine, my friends. In just six years, there could be people up there — eating breakfast, doing science, looking down at our blue Earth." His tail gave a happy swish.

Then he handed each child a small balloon. "Now you try. Toss it up and watch how slowly it falls. That's a tiny taste of Moon gravity. Hop accordingly!"

The News: Scientists with Project CETI just released the world's first video of a sperm whale being born. The 34-minute footage was filmed off the coast of Dominica, in the Caribbean Sea. About ten other whales — many of them from a totally different whale family — gathered around the mother and took turns gently lifting the newborn calf to the surface for hours. Without their help, the baby would have sunk.

📚 A STORY FROM PROFESSOR PIP

The seaside rock was warm from a long afternoon of sun. Professor Pip set down a wide glass bowl, filled it with seawater, and pulled a little balloon from his pocket along with his pocket notebook labeled "Notes."

"Curiouser and curiouser!" he murmured, patting his coat. "Today we are going to talk about whales. Specifically — how a brand-new whale knows what to do."

"What DOES it do?" Mia asked, kneeling beside the bowl.

Pip's tail curled around the rock. "Well! Yesterday I read the most extraordinary thing. Scientists in the Caribbean Sea filmed a mama sperm whale having her baby. And the OTHER whales — about ten of them — formed a gentle circle. Then they took turns lifting the newborn up, up, up to the surface so it could take its very first breath."

"For how long?" Leo asked, eyes huge.

"Hours and hours!" Pip's whiskers quivered. "Because here's the thing, my friends — a baby sperm whale cannot float on its own. Not at first."

Theo wrinkled his freckled nose. "But… isn't water all squishy and pushy?"

"Precisely the right question!" Pip beamed and held up the balloon. "Watch." He blew air into the balloon until it was small and round, then pushed it deep down into the bowl of water and let it go. POP! It shot straight back to the surface, sloshing water everywhere. The children laughed.

"That bouncy-up push from the water," Pip said, eyes twinkling, "is called buoyancy. Air is light. Water is heavy. So things full of air want to FLOAT. Now…" He pulled a small smooth pebble from his pocket and dropped it in. PLOP. Straight to the bottom.

"The pebble is heavy and has no air inside. Now — newborn whales are big and heavy and don't have quite enough air in their lungs yet. So if no one lifts them…" Pip's tail drooped. "They sink. And whales breathe air, just like us. They have to reach the surface."

"So the other whales lift it!" cried Mia. "Like floaties at the pool!"

"Exactly right!" Pip clapped his paws. "And here's the most wonderful part. Some of those helper whales weren't even family. They were from a different group entirely. They just came to help."

Pip looked out across the calm blue sea for a long moment. Somewhere out there, whole pods were watching out for each other. "Sometimes the kindest thing science finds," he said softly, "isn't a fact. It's a friend."

He handed each child a balloon. "Now you try. See if you can get it to stay underwater. Buoyancy will fight you the whole way."

The News: Scientists studying ancient amber from Myanmar just discovered something nobody has ever seen before — a 100-million-year-old insect with claws like a tiny crab! They named it Carcinonepa libererrantes . It lived in a Cretaceous forest near the coast, back when dinosaurs were still wandering Earth, and probably used those pincer-claws to grab smaller bugs for dinner. It got stuck in sticky tree sap, and that sap eventually turned to amber, freezing the little hunter in place for 100 million years.

Inside Professor Pip's cozy wood-paneled lab, the lamps glowed amber. He carefully unwrapped a small velvet pouch and placed something golden onto a soft cushion. Then he produced his very largest magnifying glass.

"Oh my whiskers," he whispered. "Come closer. Just a little closer. There. NOW look."

Mia, Leo, and Sofia tiptoed up to the workbench. Through the magnifying glass, inside the honey-gold chunk, was a tiny dark shape: a bug — with what looked like little crab claws on its front legs.

"Is that…" Sofia squinted, pushing up her glasses. "Is that a CRAB-BUG?"

"Curiouser and curiouser!" Pip's tail swished. "Yesterday, scientists in Myanmar shared this discovery. Inside a tiny window of ancient sap, frozen in time, is an insect nobody has ever seen before. They named it Carcinonepa." Pip rolled the name on his tongue. "And those little crab-claws? Real. He used them to grab his lunch."

"How OLD is it?" Mia asked.

"One. Hundred. Million. Years."

All three children's mouths fell open.

"Now, here's the question," Pip said, tapping his spectacles back up his nose. "How does a bug stay perfectly preserved for 100 million years? Let me show you." He plucked a small bottle from the shelf, drizzled a single thick golden drop of tree sap onto a leaf, then carefully placed a tiny paper drawing of an ant in the middle. The sap oozed slowly over the paper. PLOP. SQUELCH.

"Imagine," Pip said, "a curious bug, going about his bug business, when SPLAT — a sticky drop of pine sap falls on him." Pip mimed great alarm. "He's stuck! He cannot wriggle free."

"Awww," Leo said, frowning.

"I know, I know. But here is the magic. Over time — a very, VERY long time — that sticky sap hardens. It buries. It hardens MORE. It turns into stone-like, glassy, golden amber." Pip tapped the real amber chunk. "And inside, the little creature is held safe. Every leg. Every claw. Every whisker. Preserved."

"Oh!" Sofia gasped. "Like a time capsule!"

"EXACTLY right!" Pip clapped. "A 100-million-year-old time capsule, telling us what kinds of creatures lived alongside the dinosaurs."

Pip gazed at the amber for a long moment. "Every drop of sap that became amber is a tiny letter from the past." His voice was soft now. "And we are just learning how to read them."

He handed each child a glass bead and a slip of paper. "Now I wonder… if a piece of amber from TODAY were found in 100 million years, what creature would YOU want preserved inside? Draw it."
