A Fossil Caught Three Prehistoric Beasts at Dinner

The News

Palaeontologists in Queensland, Australia announced a world-first fossil find this week. Near a small outback town called Richmond, they uncovered the skeleton of a 6-metre ichthyosaur — a dolphin-shaped sea reptile that lived over 100 million years ago. Inside its stomach they found the bones of a flying reptile (a pterosaur). And on the ichthyosaur's own skeleton were enormous bite marks from a Kronosaurus, the sea monster of Australia's ancient inland ocean. It's the first time all three links of a prehistoric food chain have been preserved together in one fossil.

A Story from Professor Pip's Science Discovery

Professor Pip pushed his slightly crooked spectacles up on his nose and rummaged excitedly through a wooden crate in the corner of his lab. "Ah-HA!" he cried, pulling out three little figurines and setting them on his wooden table with a click, click, click.

Mia, Leo, and Asha leaned in, their eyes wide.

"Today," said Professor Pip, his tail swishing behind him, "we're solving a 100-million-year-old detective mystery." He held up the first figurine — a small winged reptile with leathery wings. "This is a pterosaur. Not a dinosaur, but a flying reptile that soared over the sea back when dinosaurs walked the land."

"Cool!" whispered Leo.

Pip held up the second — sleek, dolphin-shaped, with a long snout full of teeth. "This is an ichthyosaur, a giant swimming reptile. Bigger than a car."

Then he held up the third — enormous, wide-jawed, and toothy. "And THIS is a Kronosaurus, the sea monster boss of Queensland's ancient ocean. Bigger than a bus. Its teeth were the size of bananas."

"Oh my whiskers," gasped Asha.

"Now watch closely," said Pip. He stacked them. Pterosaur… inside ichthyosaur… inside kronosaurus. "Scientists in Australia just found a fossil that shows all three, one inside the other."

Mia's mouth dropped open. "Wait. WHAT?"

"A group of fossil hunters found some big bones near a little town called Richmond," said Pip, patting his notebook. "They nicknamed them B.O.B. — short for Bag Of Bones. Very technical." His eyes twinkled. "But B.O.B. turned out to be a giant ichthyosaur. And inside its stony belly, hidden in a rocky lump, were tiny pieces of a pterosaur — its very last meal. And on the ichthyosaur's own bones? Enormous bite marks from a Kronosaurus that ate IT next."

"So the flying one got eaten by the swimming one," said Leo slowly, "and the swimming one got eaten by the SEA MONSTER one?"

"Precisely!" cried Professor Pip, paw-clapping. "That's called a food chain — who eats whom in a place. This is the first time anyone has ever found all three links of a food chain preserved together in one Australian fossil. A three-course dinner, frozen in stone."

"It's like a nesting doll of who-ate-who!" Asha giggled.

"Exactly right!" Pip beamed. "And scientists used a special machine to peek INSIDE the stony lump without breaking it — a machine that sees with tiny, tiny particles called neutrons. Almost like an X-ray for fossils. That's how they spotted the pterosaur bones tucked inside."

He looked at his three little figurines. "One hundred million years ago, this happened in a single Sunday afternoon. And a Bag Of Bones let us watch it happen — all these years later." He handed each child a bit of clay. "Now you three make your OWN food chain, and see who ends up on top."
