Scientists Found a Sweet Sugar Floating Near the Milky Way's Heart
The News
Astronomers using two radio telescopes in Spain have detected a real sugar molecule — called erythrulose, the same kind found in raspberries — drifting inside a giant gas cloud near the center of our Milky Way galaxy. It's the first time scientists have spotted a true sugar anywhere beyond our own Solar System.
Professor Pip nudged his crooked spectacles up his nose and grinned at the open dome above his head. A river of stars spilled across the sky, so bright that Mia and Leo could see each other’s faces in the starlight.
“Oh my whiskers, look at that!” Pip whispered. He patted his bulging green lab coat pockets and, with a small “Aha!” pulled out two chunky wooden blocks and a tiny dish of sparkling sugar crystals.
“Sugar?” said Leo, squinting. “For a snack?”
“Not tonight, my curious scientist,” Pip chuckled. “Tonight, our snack is a question.” His tail swished. “Astronomers just found real sugar — the same kind that’s inside raspberries — floating way out there, near the middle of our galaxy. But how does sugar get into space?”
Mia’s eyes went round. “There aren’t any grocery stores up there.”
“Precisely!” said Pip. “So it has to build itself. Watch.” He held up one wooden block. “Pretend this is a tiny piece called glycolaldehyde. Two atoms of carbon. A very small Lego.” He held up the second block. “And this one is ethylene glycol. Also two atoms of carbon. Another small Lego.”
He clicked the two blocks together with a CLACK!
“Ta-da! Four carbon atoms. And that,” Pip said, tapping the joined blocks, “is a real sugar. Scientists call it erythrulose.”
Leo scrunched his nose. “So sugar is just… smaller pieces stuck together?”
“Exactly right! In space, tiny grains of icy dust drift through cold clouds. Little building-block molecules land on the ice. When starlight or a cosmic ray warms the grain, the molecules zip around, bump into each other, and — CLICK — they stick.” Pip clacked the blocks again for emphasis. “Bigger pieces. Then bigger ones. Until, one day…” He pointed to the little dish. “Sugar.”
Mia gasped. “Like snapping Legos together, but in space?”
“Exactly right, Mia!” Pip beamed. “The whole galaxy is a great big chemistry set. Stars aren’t even born yet in some of those clouds, and already — already — the ingredients for cookies, and honey, and you, are being stirred up.”
He looked up through the dome for a long moment. The stars shimmered like scattered sugar of their own.
“Now I wonder,” Pip said softly, “if every star we can see has some tiny sweet cloud tucked around it, just waiting.”
He handed Mia and Leo each a wooden block. “Your turn. See what you can build.”
