The Shark That Takes a Stroll

Off the coral reefs of Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea, scientists just identified a brand new species of 'walking shark' — the Dudgeon walking shark, Hemiscyllium dudgeonae. It uses its little fins like tiny legs to crawl along the seafloor, and can even survive briefly OUT of the water when the tide goes low.
Professor Pip was crouched on a smooth wet rock at the edge of a tropical reef when the children came racing up, sandy feet slapping.
"Professor! Professor! What are you looking at?!"
Pip pressed a paw to his lips. "Shhhh," he whispered, tail swishing. "Come see. But QUIETLY. And gently."
Mia, Leo, and Beatrix knelt beside him and peered into the bright turquoise tide pool. And there, on the sandy bottom, was something extraordinary: a small, spotted shark, about as long as Pip's forearm — walking. Its little fins pushed against the sand, one after the other, like a puppy taking careful steps.
"That shark is WALKING!" whisper-shouted Beatrix. "Sharks don't walk! Sharks SWIM!"
"Ah!" said Pip, spectacles slipping down his nose. "Most sharks do. But not this one. Meet the walking shark — a real, brand-new species scientists just described from Papua New Guinea. They call it the Dudgeon walking shark."
Leo blinked. "But why doesn't it just swim?"
"Precisely the right question," said Pip. He held up his paw and wiggled it low to the sand. "Its food — little crabs, tiny fish — hides in cracks in the reef. Walking is better than swimming when you're looking for snacks under rocks. You can go slow. You can peek."
"But what about when the tide goes out?" Mia asked. "Sometimes tide pools get REALLY shallow."
Pip's whiskers twitched. "Now THAT is where the magic gets bigger. When water gets low, this shark can walk across dry rocks between pools. To keep breathing, it does something incredible — it SLOWS its own heart. Slows its breathing. It becomes a tiny, quiet, patient creature until it reaches deeper water again." Pip tapped his chest. "This trick is called metabolic slowdown. It saves oxygen — the same way you can hold your breath longer if you stay still than if you run around."
"Oh!" said Leo. "It's like when Grandma tells me to take slow breaths before diving under the water!"
"Exactly right!" beamed Pip.
He looked out across the reef, where the wide blue Pacific sparkled all the way to the horizon. "There are only ten kinds of walking sharks in the whole world. Ten. And this one is the newest. Somewhere out there, more are still waiting."
Pip pulled out four small notebooks and passed one to each child. "Now you try. Sit still by the tide pool. Draw whatever creature you spot. Count how slowly you can breathe. Sometimes being still is how a scientist SEES."
