The Very First Wigglers: 567-Million-Year-Old Fossils in Canada

The News

Paleontologists from the American Museum of Natural History and Dartmouth just announced the discovery of a spectacular fossil site in a remote part of Canada's Northwest Territories. The fossils — squishy, disc-shaped, and ribbon-like creatures called the Ediacaran biota — are about 567 million years old. That's 5 to 10 million years earlier than scientists thought the first animals started to move and reproduce. Their study just came out in Science Advances.

A Story from Professor Pip's Science Discovery

The riverbank was chilly and the wind smelled of moss. Professor Pip crouched down, pulled a tiny brush from his pocket, and swept the dust off a flat gray rock.

"Come look, my fellow scientists," he whispered. "You are about to meet some of the FIRST animals that ever lived on Earth."

Sofia and Theo leaned in. Under the dust, faint swirling shapes appeared — like leaves and coins and squiggly ribbons pressed into the stone.

"They look… squishy," Theo said.

"They WERE squishy!" Pip adjusted his crooked spectacles. "No bones. No shells. Just soft bodies drifting on the deep ocean floor. Scientists call them the Ediacaran biota. And these particular ones are five hundred and sixty-seven MILLION years old."

Sofia's mouth fell open. "How much is that?"

Pip pulled a long roll of paper ribbon from his pocket and unrolled it across the mossy ground. "Imagine every year of Earth's history is one tiny step. If you walked from here to the North Pole, THIS," he pointed to the fossil, "would be waaaay past the pole and halfway across the world."

"Whoa," Theo whispered.

"For three billion years before these creatures," Pip continued, "life on Earth was just microbes. Tiny things you'd need a magnifying glass to see. And then — suddenly, in the ocean — these first big, complex critters appeared. Big enough to see. Able to move."

"They could move?!" Sofia's eyes went huge.

"Exactly right! And scientists just figured out that these ones — the ones we're looking at RIGHT NOW — are up to ten million years older than any moving animal they'd ever found before. That means animals started wiggling and finding food much earlier than anyone thought."

He picked up a smooth pebble. "Watch this." He set the pebble on a flat rock and gave it a gentle nudge. It slid an inch and stopped. "That's the first thing an animal ever does that a rock doesn't — go somewhere on purpose. That's the birth of animal behavior."

"Oh!" Theo laughed. "Like when my dog decides to walk to the food bowl instead of just laying there!"

"Curiouser and curiouser — that's it precisely!" Pip clapped his paws. "Movement means choosing. Choosing means the animal has a plan. And these little Canadian fossils are the earliest whispers of that big idea."

He looked out at the wide, quiet tundra. Somewhere under the moss, more fossils were still waiting.

"Every single creature that has ever wiggled, swum, run, or flown — every dog, every fish, every one of us — traces back to squishy little pioneers like these." He handed Sofia and Theo each a tiny brush. "Now… I wonder what YOU might uncover next."
