Professor Pip adjusted his slightly crooked spectacles and patted the bulging pockets of his green lab coat. The waves whispered against the sandy shore as he reached in and pulled out a long, curved fossil tooth, almost as long as his arm. He held it up to the late-afternoon sun and aimed his magnifying glass at the tip.
"Curiouser and curiouser!" he murmured.
Mia and Leo skidded to a stop on the warm sand beside him, sandals dangling from their fingers.
"Whoa," Mia whispered. "What IS that?"
"This, my dear scientists, is a tooth," Pip said proudly, his tail swishing. "But not from a shark. Not from a whale. From a creature that lived in this very ocean… eighty million years ago!"
Leo squinted. "When dinosaurs were around?"
"Precisely!" said Pip. "And here is today's puzzle. We all know T. rex stomped the LAND. But who was the biggest, scariest hunter in the SEA?"
He held up the tooth again. "Scientists just gave it a name: Tylosaurus rex. A new kind of mosasaur." He sounded it out — moss-uh-sore. "Mosasaurs were giant ocean reptiles, more like enormous swimming lizards than fish. Tylosaurus rex was the length of a school bus — forty-three feet long!"
Both kids gasped.
"Now watch this." Pip waddled over to a piece of driftwood and held up a smooth round seashell. He gently tapped the shell against the log. Crunch! The shell split clean in half.
"That," he said, "is what scientists call a skull-crushing bite. Tylosaurus rex had jaws so strong, and teeth so sharp, it could chomp through bony fish, big squid — even other mosasaurs."
Leo's eyes went wide. "It nibbled its own cousins?!"
"Sometimes," said Pip with a soft smile. "The fossils show old scars from underwater scuffles. Imagine two giant swimming reptiles, way bigger than orcas, ruling the ocean while T. rex was busy stomping the land high above."
He pointed across the gentle waves. "Way out there — in much deeper water than this — that's the world Tylosaurus rex lived in."
Mia bit her lip, thinking. "Oh! It's like… T. rex had a sea cousin nobody had names for!"
"Exactly right!" Pip beamed, paws clapping. "And the very best part? This kind of tooth sat in a museum drawer for years, labeled wrong. A scientist named Amelia Zietlow took another look — and discovered a brand-new species nobody knew about. New dinosaurs are still hiding, waiting for a curious eye."
He gently placed the tooth into Mia's palm. "Now you try. Hunt for fossils on your next beach trip. The Earth has more secrets than we have spectacles."
